The two main factors that determine the type of Schengen visa that you should apply for are:

  1. YOUR UK VISA / UK RESIDENCE PERMIT STATUS CATEGORY
    – If the spouse/dependant of a UK (British) National you should apply for a Spousal Schengen Visa
    – If the spouse of a EU National other than British, technically you do not require a Visa
    – If you have a C-Visit Visa, you do not qualify and cannot obtain a visa for France from the UK
    – If you have a UK visa issued for 6 months or less,  you do not qualify and cannot obtain a visa for France from the UK
    – If none of the above but you have Leave To Enter or Remain in the UK (eg Tier1, Tier2, Tier4, Tier5, ILR, Ancestry etc.) the Schengen visa will be based on the purpose of your trip:
  2. PURPOSE OF YOUR TRIP
    – If conducting business meetings where employed/self employed etc. (not student)  : Business Visa
    – If attending conference (not participating/working at the conference):  Private Category of Short Stay Visa
    – If attending a short educational study course or internship that is less than 90 days in duration: Private Category of Short Stay Visa
    – If staying at a friend’s or a relatives’ personal accommodation in France: Friends/Family Category of Short Stay Visa
    – If staying in Hotel/Hostel, B+B, Ski Resort: Tourist Visa
    – If transiting through France onward to another country to which you have legal access: Transit Visa
